The meaning of ‘Never Mind’

‘Never Mind’ is a blend of a few music genres all serving one purpose, to tell a story beyond the human voice.
The track is titled ‘Never Mind’ because for me, this instrumental serves to capture a point in time where you wanted to say something that felt important enough to break away from the everyday acts of your life and share your thoughts. Then for whatever reason, you decided otherwise.
Though you never said it out loud, you thought to yourself “…nevermind” and that initial eagerness of your words faded with each walk back to whatever it was you were doing. It’s that moment between that touch on the door handle, and right before you turn around to walk back. That’s what ‘Never Mind’ is all about. But, it wasn’t enough to make this very chill, lo-fi piece of music that feels like one big shrug of the shoulder or “whatever” you know?
That little interlude at the end was not originally meant to exist. That was a much later added decision. I would have felt content had it ended at the point of silence where all of the build to the music finally stops. But, as I was reworking through it (feeling like I really sucked at this music production thing for the 100th time), that silence started to speak back to me.
It just didn’t feel like silence anymore.
It felt like an unspoken thought. A hidden thought behind the intent of the conversation lost to a “…nevermind”.
That interlude then became quite important in making room for a change of thought. It starts making me think ‘was it really just..whatever?’ That unspoken conversation or thought, was it really “nevermind?”
It was never my intent to communicate what I personally saw and felt to the listener, but I thought it worth sharing where this song takes me and makes me feel, wondering if you felt the same. I mean, we’re all an audience to this performance we call life. Even our own, don’t you think? I find with every song I write I go from: creator - critic (the worst) - audience separated from knowing they were once the creator. An interesting set of seats to interchange between, but it’s being the audience that reminds me of why I love making music and sharing what I create.
